Joico labels it for professional use only. It is not an at-home treatment and is used as part of an in-salon colour or lightening service.

Many bond protectors have to be mixed into the colour or lightener, which means measuring and sometimes adjusting the formula. Pro Series 1 is sprayed onto dry hair before the service, so the colourist's usual formula and timing stay the same. It is aimed at salons that want bond protection on every colour client without slowing the service down.

• Shake the can vigorously.
• On dry hair, before the chemical service, start at the back of the head and spray onto horizontal sections from 3 to 6 inches away, in short bursts.
• Continue until all sections are treated. Areas that are more damaged can get an extra application.
• Comb through for even distribution.
• Apply colour or lightener as usual and follow the colour manufacturer's directions.
• After processing, rinse or shampoo as the colour directions state, then follow with Defy Damage Pro Series 2.
