Not intended for natural, untreated hair (System 1/2 territory) or for treated hair with more advanced, progressed thinning, which Nioxin addresses with System 4. Suitable for men and women; used by stylists offering scalp treatments in-salon and by consumers maintaining color-treated hair at home.

Color-treated and chemically processed hair is structurally more porous and breakage-prone than natural hair, so a conditioner built around that difference makes more sense than a generic thickening conditioner. This product's addition of hydrolyzed silk and candlenut seed oil — absent from Nioxin's natural-hair System 2 conditioner — targets that added fragility directly, while the shared niacinamide/biotin/panthenol base keeps it consistent with the rest of the System 3 regimen.

Use after shampooing with Nioxin System 3 Cleanser. Massage into the scalp and hair, leave on for one to three minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with the System 3 leave-in scalp treatment, applied to scalp and hair and left in (not rinsed). Nioxin recommends the complete three-step System 3 regimen at least three times a week for visible results within 30 days.

What it does well: because it's formulated specifically for treated hair, it includes silk protein and candlenut oil aimed at hair that's already fragile from color or chemical services — a more targeted approach than a one-size-fits-all damaged-hair conditioner. Where to be realistic: it's a rinse-out step with a short 1–3 minute contact time, so it conditions rather than deep-repairs; heavily damaged hair may still need a dedicated bond-repair treatment alongside it. The formula also contains parabens and isopropyl alcohol, which some color-conscious consumers try to minimize.
