Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo is a color-safe, everyday cleanser made with Hawaiian awapuhi extract that hydrates strands and removes the dulling buildup that leaves hair flat. It is the brand's best-selling shampoo and suits every hair type, with fine and static-prone hair benefiting most.

The formula works up a rich lather, rinses clean and leaves hair soft and manageable, with a cucumber melon scent and soft floral notes. It is vegan, cruelty free, paraben free and made without gluten. It also works as a body wash.

  • Sizes: 10.14 oz (300 ml), 16.9 oz (500 ml) and 33.8 oz (1000 ml); the litre pump is sold separately
  • Pairs with Awapuhi Conditioner

All hair types, and especially fine or static-prone hair that needs moisture without weight. Color-safe, so it works on color-treated hair too.

A retail shampoo for everyday home use.

Awapuhi Shampoo is the original Paul Mitchell formula built around awapuhi extract harvested on the brand's farm in Hawaii. It cleans well enough to brighten hair dulled by buildup while still leaving it soft and hydrated, which is why it has stayed the brand's top-selling shampoo. It was named to Harper's Bazaar's Beauty Hall of Fame in 2025.

Massage into wet hair.

Rinse. Repeat as needed.

Follow with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Conditioner.

Pros:

  • Rich lather that cleans thoroughly and lifts dulling buildup
  • Light enough for fine hair, so it does not weigh strands down
  • Color-safe and vegan
  • Works as a body wash too

Cons:

  • Contains sulfates (SLS), so it is not for anyone avoiding sulfates
  • Contains methylisothiazolinone, which some people with sensitive skin avoid
  • Very dry or damaged hair may want a richer formula, such as the Awapuhi Wild Ginger Nourishing Shampoo
