Redken Texture Paste (formerly sold as Rough Paste 12) is a moldable styling paste for creating rough, deconstructed texture with medium, flexible hold on short to medium-length hair. Built around a wheat-protein conditioning agent plus wax-type esters and a silicone, it separates strands for a piecey, matte finish that stays workable through the day rather than hardening or turning sticky.
Because the hold is medium rather than maximum, it suits looks that call for movement and texture — tousled, undone styles, spiked or piecey finishes, and reworkable cuts — rather than styles that need to be locked completely in place. Redken designed the formula to be reworkable, so hair can be restyled through the day without washing it out and starting over.
The formula itself is synthetic-forward: dimethicone (a silicone) and petrolatum sit alongside wax-like esters such as C20-40 alkyl stearate and tribehenin, with hydrolyzed wheat protein as the main plant-derived conditioning ingredient, plus fragrance and cosmetic colorants.
To use, rub a small amount between the palms to warm and soften the paste, then work it through damp or dry hair, focusing on the ends and mid-lengths for texture. For a stronger effect, layer on more product in small amounts as needed rather than applying a large amount at once.
