It lets you remove bulk and blend layers directly, which is faster than repeated scissor-over-comb passes for heavy or coarse sections, and it produces softer, less blunt ends than shear-only thinning.

Work on a small, dry or damp section of hair at a time — trying to thin too much hair in one pass is the most common cause of over-thinning. Hold the comb as you would a regular comb, with the blade edge angled roughly 30–45 degrees to the hair shaft rather than flat against it. Glide the blade down from mid-shaft to ends in one smooth stroke, avoiding the root area where over-thinning is hardest to fix. Check the section's thickness before repeating a pass on the same area. When the blade starts pulling or snagging instead of cutting cleanly, slide the cover off and replace it.
