Pairs well with

This razor comb from Diane is a hairstyling tool that combines a comb with a razor blade for thinning, layering, and texturizing hair. It comes with 2 double-edge razor blades already fitted inside the comb head, and the cover slides off so a stylist can swap in a fresh blade once one dulls. It takes standard double-edge blades, the same kind sold separately for safety razors, so replacements are easy to source.

Hairstylists and barbers doing thinning, layering, or texturizing work, and experienced at-home users comfortable handling a blade close to the scalp.

  • Best suited to someone who already understands razor-cutting technique, since it removes hair permanently with each pass
  • Not a substitute for thinning shears for a beginner still learning where and how much to thin

It lets you remove bulk and blend layers directly, which is faster than repeated scissor-over-comb passes for heavy or coarse sections, and it produces softer, less blunt ends than shear-only thinning.

Work on a small, dry or damp section of hair at a time — trying to thin too much hair in one pass is the most common cause of over-thinning. Hold the comb as you would a regular comb, with the blade edge angled roughly 30–45 degrees to the hair shaft rather than flat against it. Glide the blade down from mid-shaft to ends in one smooth stroke, avoiding the root area where over-thinning is hardest to fix. Check the section's thickness before repeating a pass on the same area. When the blade starts pulling or snagging instead of cutting cleanly, slide the cover off and replace it.

Advantages:

  • Uses standard double-edge blades, so keeping it sharp is cheap and the blades are widely available
  • Comb-and-blade design lets you section and thin hair in one motion rather than switching tools
  • Cover slides off for quick blade swaps without extra tools

Limitations:

  • A sharp, exposed blade means less margin for error than scissor-over-comb thinning — overuse on one section can leave hair too thin or uneven
  • Only 2 blades are included; more will need to be bought separately once they dull
