Because the cleansing base is sulfate-driven, it lathers richly and rinses hair completely clean rather than leaving a conditioning film, which is the point for a volumizing shampoo: less residue on the strand means more root lift. Cocamidopropyl betaine is included to soften the sulfates' effect on the scalp, and glycerin and tocopherol (vitamin E) are present in small amounts, though this is a cleansing formula rather than a moisturizing one.
