Pairs well with

The High Tide Deep Waver is a three-barrel styling iron from amika that presses hair between three 0.7 inch (18.5mm) tourmaline ceramic barrels to create a tight, crimped-wave pattern in a single pass, rather than the looser curl a single round barrel produces.

Temperature is digitally adjustable from 120°F to 390°F (50°C to 198°C), so finer hair can be styled at a lower setting while thicker or more resistant hair can use the higher end of the range. The ceramic barrel coating and negative-ion output are intended to reduce frizz and static as hair passes through, and amika notes the barrels use far-infrared heat to distribute heat more evenly than a purely surface-heated plate.

Other features include a 9 ft swiveling cord, a fold-out kickstand for resting the iron upright between sections, a cool tip for holding the tool safely near the ends, dual voltage (110-240V) for use outside North America, and an optional 30-minute auto shut-off.

This is the standard 0.7 inch barrel version; amika also sells a Jumbo High Tide Deep Waver with 1.25 inch barrels for a looser, more natural-looking wave on longer hair — the two are not interchangeable.

This tool suits anyone who wants a defined, crimped-style wave pattern rather than a smooth curl — a texture that's harder to get consistently with a curling wand or flat iron alone. Because the barrels are a fixed 0.7 inch, it produces a tighter wave and works best on medium-length to long hair; very short hair may not have enough length to clamp through all three barrels.

It's usable by home stylists as well as professionals (the adjustable 120-390°F range covers both fine, heat-sensitive hair and coarser, resistant textures), and the dual voltage means it can also be packed for international travel.

The mechanism is the differentiator: instead of wrapping a section around one barrel, this iron clamps hair flat between three parallel barrels at once, producing the tighter, more uniform crimp-wave look rather than a rounder curl. The tourmaline ceramic coating and negative-ion output are there to offset the friction and static that come from repeatedly clamping and releasing sections, and the far-infrared heating is intended to warm hair through rather than just at the surface, so the wave sets with fewer passes at a lower temperature than a plate with surface heating alone.

  • Plug in and select a temperature between 120°F and 390°F based on hair thickness and heat tolerance (lower for fine or color-treated hair).
  • Divide dry, styling-product-prepped hair into upper and lower sections and clip hair out of the way.
  • Take a 1-2 inch section, open the clamp, and insert hair close to the roots, keeping the section flat and horizontal.
  • Close the clamp and hold for about 5 seconds (longer for a more defined wave), then release and move down the length, repeating until you reach the ends.
  • Continue section by section through the rest of the hair; for face-framing pieces, angle the tool slightly downward for a softer wave.
  • Let waves cool before separating with fingers or a brush, and use the kickstand to rest the tool safely between sections.

Pros:

  • Three fixed barrels produce a consistent, repeatable wave pattern in one clamp-and-hold motion, rather than wrapping hair by hand around a single barrel
  • Digital temperature control down to 120°F allows lower, gentler settings for fine or damaged hair
  • Dual voltage (110-240V) and a long 9 ft swivel cord add practical flexibility for travel or in-salon use

Cons:

  • Fixed 0.7 inch barrel size means the wave pattern isn't adjustable — a looser wave requires amika's separate Jumbo (1.25 inch) version instead
  • Very short hair may not reach across all three barrel sections, limiting the effect near the front hairline
  • Takes practice to section hair evenly per clamp; uneven sectioning shows more visibly than with a single-barrel wand
